We bought the bird feeder about 2 months ago and my only concern with this is that you cannot hang it from a regular bird feeder pole. You must use the pole that comes with it. I have replaced a bird feeder with this one and the weight is a slight issue. The pole bends too much. The squirrels have figured out a way to get some food but not much. They hang from the current pole (not the pole that comes with it) by its hind legs, put their front legs on the bar and pick out some seeds. All-in-all it works great!! I would recommend it highly!!

Allow side clearance (2009-06-05)
I initially hung the feeder from a branch on an ornamental fruit tree, but discovered the squirrels could reach from another nearby branch and bypass the spring-loaded perches. Ended up moving it to a different tree where it could have enough side clearance to prevent this. I never would have guessed the little buggers could reach out a foot with nothing to hold onto until a front paw caught the tray the seeds land on.

They can still get on top of the feeder, grab a hinge or the hanger hook with a back paw, then reach around to the tray with a front paw. I've not lost much seed this way, but pole-mounting, with a squirrel-guard on the pole would have probably been the best way to go. Then you also loose the hook. The only open areas I had were not easily visible from the house. If it's too close to a tree or the house they can jump. Let's hope they don't learn how to build hang-gliders.

We have had this feeder for many years. I have never seen the squirrels successfully beat it - I have often watched them with much amusement as they try. We have it on a pole in the middle of a perennial bed, so there is nothing for the squirrels to leap from to get on top of it. Guess that helps. We did, however, have problems at first with the deer coming up and licking the seeds out of the feeding tray. We stopped that by locating the feeder in the midst of some ornamental grasses - deer hate grasses and won't walk thru them. So, for years now, the feeder has been unmolested by squirrels and deer alike. Some squirrels are more clever than others, as these reviews attest. If the squirrels beat it, then your next step is to get seed mix that is treated with cayenne. Birds don't mind it a bit, but the squirrels hate it so they eventually quit eating your seed. good luck!

Heritage Farms Bird Feeder (2009-04-26)
Indeed, this feeder not only keeps the squirrels out of the bird seed, it also keeps the pigeons out of it. However, the pigeons do come and keep the ground clean of the sprouting seeds. We enjoy watching the birds coming to this feeder, although, where we live, the feed goes quickly.
